Title: 75th Anniversary Smarties

Medium: Oil On Board

Framed Size: 40cm x 36cm

P.O.A.

Rowntree's of York, England, have been making "Chocolate Beans" since at least 1882. The product was renamed "Smarties Chocolate Beans" in 1937. The brand changed to "Smarties" in 1938 and Smarties tubes were introduced.

Smarties in the UK were sold in cylindrical cardboard tubes, capped with a colourful plastic lid usually having a letter of the alphabet on it. In February 2005, the Smarties tube was replaced with a hexagonal design. The rationale behind the changing was, according to Nestle, to make the brand "fresh and appealing" to youngsters.

This painting is of a 75th Anniversary tube from 2012. I have painted many of the older cylindrical tubes, which I remember from my childhood, and although a different challenge to paint it still has a similar font to some of the older designs.

This painting is currently on loan at the Museum of Brands in my 'Brushstrokes to Brands' exhibition but will be available in 2024. For enquiries please call Steven: 07799113378 or CONTACT
